NEW ORLEANS – Saints cornerback Jabari Greer, who returned to practice just this week after having sports hernia surgery on Aug. 2, is inactive for today’s regular-season opener with the Washington Redskins.
Greer was one of four inactives listed by the Saints, who have only 50 players on their active roster after making several moves on Saturday.
Second-year pro Johnny Patrick, who got quality snaps with the first-team defense in training camp and the exhibition season because of injuries to Greer and Patrick Robinson, will start at left cornerback.
Rookie cornerback Corey White, a fifth-round draft pick, will likely be the fifth defensive back on the field when the Saints go to their nickel package.
INACTIVES: The Saints’ other inactives are RB Chris Ivory, DT Akiem Hicks and DT Tyrunn Walker.
Ivory, one of five halfbacks on the roster, was a healthy scratch in favor of rookie Travaris Cadet. They vied for the fourth spot at the position during the preseason behind Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles and Mark Ingram.
The only inactives of note for the Redskins are SS Brandon Meriweather (knee) and NT Chris Baker. Rex Grossman is the third quarterback.
SERIES HISTORY: Today’s game will be the 24th regular-season meeting between the Saints and Redskins.
The Redskins lead the series, 15-8, and have won six of seven games played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. However, the Saints have won three of the last five games played overall.
