CHARGERS SCOUTING REPORT
Offense: The Chargers haven’t been as productive as they’d like, but Philip Rivers is capable of putting up big numbers. Rivers has 169 TDs to just 82 interceptions in his nine-year career and is a 63.8 percent passer. Antonio Gates, Malcom Floyd and Robert Meachem can be tough matchups in the passing game, while Ryan Mathews is a solid back.
Defense: The Saints will face a 3-4 defense for the fourth time in five games, which usually means that it’ll be difficult to run the ball. The front seven is an active bunch that is led by linebacker Shaun Phillips, who has 3 1/2 sacks, and the secondary is led by cornerbacks Antoine Cason and Quentin Jammer and safety Eric Weddle.
Special teams: Kicker Nate Kaeding, who is 7-for-7 in field goals, missed last week’s game with an injury, but fill-in Nick Novak made all three of his attempts. Punter Mike Scifres, a Destrehan High School graduate, averages a whopping 52.2 yards a kick, while Richard Goodman leads the return game with a 29.3 average on kickoffs.
Two Chargers’ rookies have ties to Louisiana as safety Brandon Taylor played at LSU and tight end Ladarius Green starred at Louisiana-Lafayette. Taylor has been inactive for all four games, while Green has been active for one and has one catch for 31 yards. … Former Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem has six receptions for 92 yards. … Starting nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin played for the Saints last season. … The Chargers are 3-1 for the second year in a row.
