Saints players roll out welcome wagon for Jairus Byrd on Twitter

The Saints’ front office wasted no time in reaching terms on a massive six-year deal with free-agent safety Jairus Byrd hours into the first day of free agency. So Saints players were just as quick to roll out the welcome wagon for the former Buffalo Bill who was poised to join their ranks.

Saints linebackers Curtis Lofton and Junior Galette, punter Thomas Morstead and cornerback Corey White were among those to quickly hop on Twitter and welcome Byrd, whose deal is reportedly worth $54 million, $28 million of which was guaranteed.

In the coming days, the Saints will need to clear up the salary-cap space to accommodate the deal that took the NFL by surprise. New Orleans headed into Tuesday, the start of the free agency signing period, at fewer than $3 million under the 2014 salary cap.

Whether the Saints make that space by restructuring some contracts on the books, parting ways with more players than they already have or both remains to be seen. But, as Tuesday became Wednesday, at least some New Orleans players opted to not focus on that and instead celebrated the agreement their team had struck with Byrd:

Byrd was signed hours after former Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins departed for Philadelphia in free agency.
