Lyft, known for the pink mustaches on the driver cars, and SideCar connect riders and drivers using their own vehicles. Riders give voluntary donations, and the companies take a cut.
The services are popular in big cities like San Francisco and New York. But they have seen significant resistance from cab driver associations who oppose the unregulated competition, which is what has prevented them from landing in New Orleans so far.
