Three weeks ago, the LSU men’s basketball team saw its season reach a low point as the Tigers got hammered at home 74-50 by No. 1-ranked Kentucky. The loss dropped LSU to 12-9 overall and 2-5 in SEC play.
Since then, the Tigers’ season has seen an improbable turnaround. LSU has won four of its last five, capped by the season’s first SEC road win Saturday at South Carolina, 68-58.
The win vaults LSU (16-10 overall, 6-6 SEC) into a tie for fourth with Mississippi State, Alabama and Tennessee. That’s an important benchmark, as the top four seeds earn first-round byes in the SEC Tournament, March 8-11 at New Orleans Arena.
Now, the No. 4 seed, should it survive its quarterfinal game, will likely get the pleasure of facing UK on Semifinal Saturday, but that’s a worry for another day.
Here’s a look at the remaining schedules for LSU, Alabama Mississippi State and Tennessee. For the moment, we’ll assume Florida (21-6, 9-3) and Vanderbilt (18-8, 7-4) won’t implode or that Arkansas (17-10, 5-7) or Ole Miss (15-11, 5-7) won’t be able to leapfrog the above mentioned four to force one of those teams out of that No. 4 spot:
