Six individuals from Southern’s Southwestern Athletic Conference championship basketball teams were honored Monday.
Roman Banks and Sandy Pugh were named the SWAC coaches of the year.
Banks led the men’s team to a 15-3 conference record as it clinched the regular-season title with two games left in the regular season.
Pugh led the women’s team to a 16-2 record, which included a title-clinching 71-66 victory against Texas Southern in the regular-season finale last Saturday.
Forward Calvin Godfrey was named to the All-SWAC first team and also was named Newcomer of the Year. Forward Malcolm Miller joined him on the first team and guard Trelun Banks, son of coach Banks, was named Freshman of the Year.
Jaguars forward Jasmine Jefferson was named to the All-SWAC women’s first team.
Both team have first-round byes in the SWAC tournament, which begins Tuesday in Houston. The women will play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and the men will play at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
