Southern drops to last in SWAC West

The Southern baseball team has some catching up to do if it’s going to qualify for the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.

There’s a lot of baseball still to be played, but after getting swept at Grambling over the weekend the Jaguars (1-6) are in last place in the West Division. The last-place teams in each division do not qualify for the conference tournament.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which began conference play by sweeping three games from Southern at Lee-Hines Field, leads the West with a 7-1 record, followed by Texas Southern (5-2), Grambling (5-7) and Prairie View (1-6), which visits Southern this weekend, and the Jaguars, who are 4-12 overall.

AlabamaState (12-1) leads the East, followed by JacksonState (5-4), Alabama A&M (4-5), AlcornState (3-6) and MississippiValleyState (1-9).

Southern, which still has 15 league games remaining, has a tall order on its hands in the mid-week before getting back into conference play as it visits fourth-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday.

Here’s the midweek schedule in the SWAC:
