Highlights from Southern coach Dawson Odums’ press conference

Another Tuesday, another time Dawson Odums puts up with us media folks and talks Southern football. This week, the topics included Saturday’s crushing loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the chance for redemption against Prairie View, the sputtering offense and the rash of injuries plaguing the Jaguars.

Here are some key points:

– On staying motivated after losing a shot at first place… “I believe we have some good players still on this football team, we have a football team that still believes, and we’re just looking forward to getting back on the field because the only way you can erase that is by going out, playing better and winning the next football game.” Continue reading

Southern interim coach Dawson Odums held his weekly press conference on Tuesday, discussing his team’s 34-7 homecoming win over Texas Southern and previewing Saturday’s clash with Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where first place in the SWAC West will be up for grabs.

Highlights from Dawson Odums’ Tuesday Press Conference

Back from another long day on The Bluff, and I have to say, it’s a lot more fun up there than it had been a few weeks ago.  I made the comment at practice today that it’s like someone turned the light on at Southern, because everyone seems to me more upbeat and excited about what’s going on.

That’s what winning a couple of games will do, and the Jaguars have a chance to go for three in a row Saturday at Alcorn State. It’s a game they should win, and if they do, it’ll be the first time Southern has won three straight games on the road since 2004.

This quote, from Dawson Odums’ press conference today, really sums up the mood:

“Of course, these guys haven’t been in this predicament before. They’re excited. The bus ride back (from Atlanta) — they don’t even know how to celebrate. They look at me and I look at them and say, ‘Hey, we’re doing this together.’ It’s good to see these guys having that excitement. It makes practice a lot of fun. It makes preparing for the next opponent a whole lot better. It’s always better to prepare for the next one after a W.”

Southern is on Cloud Nine, and while the Jaguars still have to learn how to handle and sustain success, these last few weeks have been nothing but positive. Odums covered that and more during his interview, and here are some of the other highlights: Continue reading
