Former star recruit Williams exonerated of drug charges

Former LSU signee Dylan Williams, a highly rated pitcher out of Georgia, was cleared of all charges stemming from a drug sting in July 2013.

Williams and four others were exonerated in the case. Two others entered guilty pleas and told a court that the five friends were not responsible for the marijuana and ecstasy seized during the raid.

Williams, now pitching for Georgia Perimeter College, was expected to enroll in LSU this past fall. He still has a second arrest pending. Williams was arrested in December and charged with statutory rape and three counts of child molestation.

At that point, coach Paul Mainieri closed the door on Williams possibly joining his team.

Williams has pitched 19 innings and has a 1.89 ERA at Georgia Perimeter, a junior college in Decatur, Ga. He told The Daily Tribune that he plans to enter the MLB amateur draft this summer.

“I wanted to go [to LSU] really bad. That was a terrible feeling not to go, but I guess everything happens for a reason. It all worked out,” Williams told the newspaper. “Right now, I’m just going to get some hours, take some summer classes and wait and see what next year brings. We’re aiming for the draft.”

Despite being indicted on drug charges in October, Williams maintained his innocence to Mainieri throughout the fall, telling the coach that he was only at Christopher Willingham’s house picking up a friend.

LSU expected the charges to be dropped and that Williams would enroll in January.

On July 23, 2013, agents from the Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at 49 Benefield Circle after Willingham was arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 75.

In a bond hearing in July, the DTF agent said Williams and others were found inside Willingham’s bedroom playing video games. Located in the room, in plain view, was a glass smoking device and a metallic grinder containing marijuana.

According to the agent, the subsequent search of the room by agents turned up approximately 6 to 6 1/2 ounces of ecstasy, or MDMA; a plastic bag containing a green, leafy substance suspected to be marijuana; and a firearm, the Tribune reported.

About 25 capsules containing molly, or the molecular form of MDMA, were found in the top drawer of a TV stand next to the bed. Also in that drawer was a .380 Ruger pistol, along with marijuana. Inside a subwoofer by the door to the room was a bag that contained more than 1 ounce of suspected MDMA. In addition, two bags of suspected MDMA were located inside the closet of that room in a shirt pocket.

LSU was counting on Williams in its rotation. The Tigers are now down to 11 healthy pitchers after injuries to Kyle Bouman and Alden Cartwright.
