What’s At Stake

  • This is a key series between two teams in similar positions. The series loser will likely be out of the race for an SEC West title and a regional host. If one of the teams can get a sweep … heck, a national seed is still possible.

What To Watch

  • Last (regular season) hurrah: Coach Paul Mainieri said Nola had, maybe, the best outing of his career in the Friday win at Texas A&M last week. That’s quite the statement. How will Nola follow up that performance in this, likely his last regular season start at Alex Box? The Tigers need him to be strong. In a key SEC series, LSU must get the series-opening win. LSU has just once this season won both Game 2 and Game 3 of a series this season.
  • Broussard’s rebound: Joe Broussard, LSU’s solid closer, struggled last week at Texas A&M. He allowed three runs in just 12 batters faced. He normally makes an appearance Friday night, entering for Nola to seal the deal.
  • Let’s play two: LSU is 0-4 in its two doubleheaders this season, losing at Florida and Vanderbilt. Mainieri says the team will treat this DH as two single games. The school will clear the stadium after Game 1. Players will go eat and relax before the second game starts, as much as four-plus hours after the first game ended.

Know Your Opponent

  • Turnbull is one of the best hurlers in the league. He’s allowed just 19 earned runs in his 12 starts. The Tide has slipped over the last two weeks, falling from its top spot in the SEC West to fourth after back-to-back series losses.
