Bill bans online impersonation

A bill that would prevent people from impersonating other people online advanced through the state Senate Judiciary committee Tuesday morning.

House Bill 96 sponsored by Helena Moreno, D-New Orleans passed despite strong objection from a Carencro man who complained to legislators HB96 doesn’t go far enough.

Marc Fruge, 34, a registered sex offender, said the bill only prevents someone from impersonating another person online. The bill would be stronger, he said, if it also prevented people from posing as fictitious characters.

Fruge said he was duped into inappropriate contact with a 14-year-old girl posing as an adult on a dating website.
