Pardon and parole board merger measure clears Legislature

A proposal to merge the state’s Pardon and Parole boards won final approval Sunday evening.

Provided it receives Gov. Bobby Jindal’s signature, House Bill 518 by state Rep. Joseph Lopinto, R-Metairie, would fold the Parole Board in the Pardon Board.

The Board of Parole would become a committee of the Board of Pardons. The committee would consist of the five Board of Pardons members and two at-large members appointed by the governor.

Lopinto previously said the change would save the state about $400,000 per year.

The state House voted 95-0 for the merger. The state Senate approved the measure by a 38-0 margin.
