Legislation that would ban tenure for future school bus drivers won final legislative approval Monday morning.
A compromise version of the measure, House Bill 293, won Louisiana House approval without debate 67-30. The state Senate, a few minutes later, approved the measure on a vote of 20-15.
The now goes to Gov. Bobby Jindal.
Backers said Louisiana is the only state in the nation that gives school bus drivers tenure, which is a form of job protection.
The prohibition would not affect school bus drivers who already enjoy tenure status.
