Cajun-Style Grits With Black-Eyed Salsa

2 cups water
1 tbl. chopped fresh jalapeno pepper
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. salt
2/3 cup quick-cooking grits
1 cup light shredded Mexican cheese
1/2 (15-oz.) can black-eyed peas or 3/4 cup cooked, dry-packaged black-eyed peas, rinsed and drained
