Make it two in a row for LSU’s Lake Charles pipeline, as the Tigers received a big commitment Monday from Barbe tight end DeSean Smith.
Smith (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) is LSU’s 18th commitment for the Class of 2013 and one of the highest-rated players in the Tigers class so far and in the nation.

Smith is ranked No. 67 on the Rivals 100, No. 102 on the 24/7 Sports Top 247, No. 143 on the ESPN 300 and No. 232 on the Scout 300. He is rated as the No. 2 prospect in Louisiana by Rivals, the No. 3 prospect in state by 24/7, and No. 5 in the state by ESPN.
A four-star prospect across the board, Smith’s commitment has given a big boost to LSU’s national recruiting rankings. According to 24/7 Sports, LSU now ranks No. 3 behind only Alabama and Michigan. And Rivals now ranks LSU at No. 4 behind Michigan, Alabama and Texas A&M.
Just last week, LSU picked up another four-star commitment from Lake Charles in Washington-Marion linebacker Melvin Jones (6-3, 245).
Rivals and ESPN do rate New Orleans Karr tight end Standish Dobard, an early commitment to Miami, ahead of Smith in terms of in-state prospects.
